Architects, engineers, and builders make use of building models to help them analyze the external and internal structure of buildings. These models can be created through the use of computer programs, instead of tangible materials. Through the analysis of geography, building materials, design, building codes, climate, and budget, a building information model (BIM) can be created. This model is useful in anticipating unexpected building issues. By studying building information modeling, you can be part of an important process of safe building construction.
There are three possible types of programs you can get from a reputable school when studying building information modeling. First of all, if you are a building professional, a civil engineer, an architect, or the like, you can take a certificate course to increase your knowledge and skills. By taking certificate programs, you do not have to spend another three years in school. You can finish the BIM course in a year or less.
Secondly, you can opt for an associate’s degree in BIM. By finishing the course, you can get the right amount of education and training required to become part of the model creation process. However, your career options may be limited as opposed to taking a full bachelor’s degree studying building information modeling.
A bachelor’s degree in BIM gives you full education and training. The program is usually a specialization for an interior design course. Aside from the usual BIM topics, you will also be learning about interior design in general. You may continue your education by taking master’s and doctoral degrees to enhance your skills and capabilities.
When studying building information modeling, coursework will depend on the level of education you choose to be part of. If you enroll in a certificate program, much of the coursework will be dealing with BIM theory and practice, BIM technology, contracts and risks, and construction processes. An associate’s degree will provide additional training in computer aided design (CAD), building construction methods, and project management methods.
Bachelor’s degree programs are more sophisticated. They involve additional subjects in design, including shape, space, form, line, mass, texture, pattern, dimension, color, and light. The coursework is designed to prepare students for a career as interior design professionals, but with specialization in the field of BIM.
You can study building information modeling on-campus or online. Working professionals usually choose to study online due to work restrictions. Some professionals choose to study online to avoid being the oldest student in class (it does happen). However, if you are more comfortable studying on-campus, be sure to have sufficient financial support.
Professionals who are working as architects, engineers, and builders can have better opportunities to gain clients if they work for themselves. Other career opportunities include the following:
BIM Administrator – A person holding this position oversees projects and ensures the efficiency of BIM programs. This is a leadership position and may require experience and tenure to become effective at handling the job.
Construction Supervisor – This professional, together with the building managers, ensures that the job gets done. He or she supervises plans, schedules, and staffing to make sure that the project is finished on time.
CAD Administrator – He or she usually has the same roles as the BIM manager, but has more supervisory tasks. He or she supervises CAD operators and related personnel to ensure the successful creation of BIM and other modeling needs.
To become any of the above-mentioned professionals, you can start by studying building information modeling courses.
