Students earning a degree in audio production may find themselves on their way to a career in broadcasting, recording, or providing technical support for live events. There are various positions supported by college and university courses dealing with the production of audio.

One job involving audio recording is that of a boom operator. This is an integral position on many film sets; the boom operator skillfully points the handheld boom and microphone toward the actors. Timing is critical for optimum levels, and it's essential to keep the microphone from appearing on camera. Another film set position that's supported by completing an audio production course is that of the sound mixer. The mixer listens to the recorded audio and sets the levels of the microphones in use.

Recording studios also have needs for graduates of college and university courses involving the production of audio. Engineers are skilled in using various microphones to record different voices or instruments. Technical knowledge of the various audio components is part of the skill set required for studio work. Individuals who mix and master recordings well, soon become in demand, as they creatively bring their mixes to life to best feature the artists recorded.

Many engineers and mixers working in studios have also been employed for live events such as concerts, conventions, or seminars. Fortunately, many of the skills acquired studying audio production for studio work are adaptable to working live events as well.

Whether a graduate is interested in broadcasting, recording, or concert support, holding a degree in audio production is an excellent step toward a career in a creative work environment.
