Courses in advertising are divided into five sections: marketing, direct marketing, interactive media, visual communications, and advertising.
Advertising courses can be undertaken either on a full time or part time basis. There are certification courses available, right up to a Masters qualification if one wishes to pursue advertising as a career pursuit.
Online courses, for example, offer programs via a primary educational portal, and online classes are conducted one to three times a week. With recorded classes available on digital portals like Blackboard and Centra, students can opt to review their existing classes. An online course applicant, however, needs to ensure that they have the capability of good time management and a high level of interest, to ensure that they are dedicated towards completing the respective degree or diploma course.
In terms of a full time course, expect to spend at least 2 years on a diploma program. Take a course in Art Direction for example, which involves modules such as digital imaging and visual impact. Classes are usually small and offer an out-of-classroom environment, with real life scenarios to prepare you for your internship and future career in advertising. A Masters course can take one-and-a-half years to complete.
Upon completion of a relevant advertising qualification, jobs available for fresh graduates in the industry include copywriters, art directors, brand strategists, and creative directors, to name a few.
