Maira Kalman (b. 1949) is an author and illustrator currently living and working in New York City. Her work has been featured in The New Yorker and the New York Times. In addition to contributing to monthly illustrated blogs, Kalman has written and illustrated 13 children’s books, including a collaborative effort with Lemony Snicket. Her work has been exhibited in San Francisco, Philadelphia, New York City, Los Angeles, and Beijing.

Working in a variety of mediums, Kalman produces paintings, drawings, and photography. Her work presents an optimistic, whimsical nature, and a distinct style; storytelling as a visual exercise. Her work is often based on her own life experiences, conversations, and chance encounters. Kalman has been a guest speaker for the TED Talks series and a guest on the Colbert Report.
