Choosing a Film School

So, you want to go to film school?  It is an excellent choice for a creative person who has a practical bent.  Film making school is also a wonderful option for a student who wants to share his or her message with the world.  Think about it—motion pictures are seen by millions the world, in theaters and homes, every day.

Making movies is a collaborative art, and this means there are many potential areas for you to study.  The best film schools offer instruction in a wide variety of jobs, including:

  • Producing
  • Directing
  • Writing
  • Sound
  • Lighting
  • Editing
  • Interactive media

Isn’t it wonderful that there are so many choices for those interested in a film career?  To make your way in the movie industry, attending film school is definitely your best bet.  Many aspects of the industry are highly technical and it will pay to get a good education at film school.

So, how do you find the top film schools?  First, choose what specialty you’d like to aim for.  If you are interested in directing, you’ll want to choose a film directing school.   If you lean more toward editing or interactive media, you’ll want to look for a film school which specializes in those areas of the business.

There are a variety of programs available when choosing a film school.  You can earn a certificate or a higher degree.  You might opt to study at dedicated academy, a film school which only teaches film.  You may choose to attend a university which offers film studies as one of their departments.  Believe it or not, you can also study at an online film school!  Technology has advanced far enough to make this not only possible, but effective.

Also be aware that technology has opened up new fields within the film industry.  Now you can choose a film school where you will learn computer editing and animation, or the technicalities of lighting and sound.

As you begin your film school search in earnest, there are several guidelines to follow.  First, ponder location.   Given their creative bent, it is important to many film school students to be in an area with a vibrant arts scene.  Also consider attending school in the area where you eventually want to settle, because you will be making valuable contacts during your education.  For many students, this will mean narrowing their search to California or New York.

However, as you do your film school research you will also want to consider the length of the program, the faculty, and whether the school has the technical facilities you will need. Another thing to look at is financial aid.  If the film school isn’t generous with it, you may not have enough money to attend.

The film industry is a special, creative, field and because of that, it can be hard to break into.  Attending film school is the best way to get a leg up on the competition.
