The “Natural Reaction” Series
When I do series work I have a focused intensity about me. My art becomes like oxygen. When you can create art, to me, it becomes an obligation. I create my art to inspire thought in a society where it has become impossible to think out loud. We can not avoid what we see, and regardless of how touchy the subject is you won’t find many people today who are afraid to stare. I make art to inspire change in nature, politics, society and morality.
Humanity was born into a symbiotic relationship with nature. Then, arguably, at some point in our past that coexistence evolved … we evolved and developed what I call structure. Webster’s defines structure as: something arranged in a definite pattern of organization. In all our enlightened wisdom we decided that it was necessary to over develop our understanding of structure in order to survive in a more comfortable fashion. Our employed understanding of organization, which now sets us apart from nature, has become conflicting to natural arbitrarity. When you introduce evolved structure to the random events in nature you will get a response. The “Natural Reaction” series is my artistic representation of the modern relationship between nature and society.
While I work in many mediums I chose to do this series in an array of media in order to best represent the vibrancies of nature. To achieve brilliant color I used what could be referred to as an almost impasto application of watercolor and ink wash. I typically work with curvilinear lines like the ribbon which represents our bond with the earth. However, in this series I had to introduce some “Structure“.
The tessellations exhibited in the works are representative of structure employed by civilization. As people we are so accustomed to structure that the pattern seems to make the piece more attractive however, as bliss subsides you will notice how the structure of the tessellation pronounces a lack of harmony with the vibrancy of nature.
The figures represent the un-evolved simplicity of mankind… our nature. They are depicted in grayscale in order to convey our gray market value of people in the natural world. We no longer seem serve much symbiotic purpose in the world. Currently we are simply feeding off the very resources we were born into and depend on. Nature is of course represented by its own brilliance and when imposed over structure displays a very aggressive balance. This of course was an unexpected natural reaction that I am pleased to be able to share.
When I started this series of works I developed two concept works. One about the birth of existence and the second about natures aggressiveness towards the changes in our evolution. Those two inspired artworks led to a burst of ten series pieces in just less than two weeks. The works were almost entirely spontaneous with the major focus of the series being about the aggressive relationship we are experiencing. When I start a series I won’t quit until I am completely burned out, it could take a few months or a few years. I can firmly say that this series is not complete as I will soon be starting a part two of “Natural Reaction” which will focus more on the symbiotic relationship developed by the use of implied evolved structure.
