maxtjones : I find it fascinating that humans have the ability to see space within a two-dimensional image. Whether that images’ platform is a television screen, canvas, or a cave wall; we appear to instinctively conceptualize or abstract away from what the thing is according to its physical properties. It is no secret that somewhere in our evolutionary past it became advantageous, if not necessary for survival to imagine, inspect, and contemplate. I think this trait forces the mind to use layers to distinguish between varying ways of seeing the same thing. Layers being combinations or sets of similar or opposing shapes, colors, textures, and eventually meanings. The mind creates visual groups and patterns by constantly comparing and contrasting these properties. The result is the ability to see an unchanged object in many different ways. Similar to the space that is created by implementing the laws of perspective, layers too have the ability to create an illusion of space.
