“Metaphorical Illusions”
Series Statement
Stacey D. Miller
Since the 1990s, my work has involved the creation of conceptually based sociopolitical and anthropological artworks in all media/ dimensions. In my work, I deconstruct society, creativity, environmental issues, politics, social dynamics, eroticism and gender roles. These themes are often combined with seemingly synonymous depictions or un-stenciled lettering used to embellish the theme and sometimes allow a sense of misdirection. The text often implies clues as to content and interpretation of the artwork. The bright palette in my work usually suggest distinctly noticeable mood in the composition. My style is described as post modern surreal expressionism. My work is created with the utmost in spontaneity, with almost no preconception of the finished piece.
In my series “Metaphorical Illusions” I address social-anthropological judgments that we make regarding our initial response to individual persons and the often ill verity of these judgments. All of the works in this series are monotype with mixed media. Each monotype started with a single drop, of the figure formed in highlights and shadows, after which I built around it to finish the composition. You will notice, in the work entitled “Chivalrous Grace”, how I use line, gradient color, text and posture of the figural depiction to portray a suggested personality or state of being that the viewer must judge. Finding the illusive being in any person is difficult as we most often present the public with what they want to see. It is for this reason that I chose to use nude depictions of the form. Far less can be hid when things are presented at face value. If the only truths are the ones that we find self-evident then all judgments on others are simply illusions that we build for ourselves to believe.
