There are many schools in Boise where you can learn game design and prepare for a creative career.

When Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling was trying to decide what to do when he retired from baseball, his business manager suggested he should invest in something that he loves.  After thinking about it, Curt decided to create a new game design company, 38Pitches.  When considering a career, studying something that you love is equally good advice. If the idea of creating a new world and populating it with unique characters sounds appealing, consider attending a Boise game design school.  Game design has three major aspects.  First, the game concept and story must be created. Then, people with computer science skills are needed to program the action while artistic individuals with knowledge of computer graphics are needed to create the visuals.  An excellent location for learning game design is Boise.

Boise is the capital and largest city in Idaho. Its location in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, along the banks of the Boise River, provides the growing and young population a high quality of life and below average cost of living. Outdoor activities include skiing, biking, kayaking, camping, hunting, and fishing.  Boise is also the home of many technical companies including Micron Technology, Hewlett-Packard, Micron Technology, MPC Computers, and Qwest Communications. Boise is an outstanding place to grow a technical career.

There are many schools in Boise to prepare for a career in game design. Boise State University is an outstanding four year college.  Although Boise State does not have a degree in game design, a BS in Computer Science for those interested in the programming side of game design or a BFA in Graphic Design for those pursuing the artistic side of game design are good options. Majors in other subjects such as History and English can prove useful to those interested in story, world and character development.  Boise State University is also a budget friendly choice with tuition for undergraduate Idaho residents for the 2008/2009 year only $4632 and total expenses estimated at $15,500 ($24,500 for out of state residents). Merit based scholarships and financial aid are available for well qualified applicants.

Other schools in Boise offer computer science or graphic design courses that prepare students for a career in game design. Stevens-Henager College offers both an associate’s degree and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.  The University of Phoenix offers programs in both Computer Science and Graphics. These programs are flexible and accommodate working students.

The ITT Technical Institute in Boise offers a BS degree in Digital Entertainment and Game Design. This degree is intended to prepare graduates for entry level positions in game design.  Along with general education courses, the degree also requires directly applicable classes such as Introduction to Gaming Technology, Managing Game Development, Physics of Animation, Game Design Process, and Creative Writing and Storyboarding for Games.  This same curriculum is offered at ITT campuses across the United States.  The same game design education found in technology centers such as California and Massachusetts can also be found in Boise.

Now is a great time to attend a game design school in Boise.  The market for games is rapidly expanding as game systems such as the WII attract not only hard core gamers but also their siblings, parents and grandparents (who often have much more money to spend).  During a recession, when people have limited funds, gaming provides great entertainment on a budget.   Almost every year, a new game console such as the XBOX 360 or Play Station 3 is introduced, requiring hundreds of new games which utilize the system’s expanded capabilities.  Many game designers educated in Boise game design schools are needed to create both the graphics and software for these games.
