More Matter and Less Art? It Matters How You Choose the Perfect Art College for You.

Choosing the “Best Art Colleges” can be an art! How do you make the best choice?

So you want to attend a great art college. The best art colleges are out there. But how do you choose the art college that’s perfect for you? It could be said the process is as easy as 1-2-3-4.

First, what do you want your art degree for? Do you want to become a great painter in oils? How about advertising art? Do you hope to become a designer of thrilling race car posters? Are you interesting in computer graphics, the kind you see in major animated Hollywood releases? Are you interested in fashion design? Comic books? Architectural drawings? Obviously, the choice of what makes the best art colleges FOR YOU depends on YOU and your career goals. Defining your wants and needs is essential.

Second, begin the search for a school. Talk to counselors at your high-school or undergraduate college. They will have catalogs, DVDs, and a wealth of information about colleges and universities. These counselors may even have a history of placing students at the very schools you’re interested in. Contact successful art professionals in your community. Ask them if there are some best art colleges they’d recommend. You’ll be surprised how quickly their answers can “cut through the clutter of schools.” When a successful professioanl says, “To tell you the truth, those kinds of animation workshops are all on the west coast,” you’ve just gathered in a priceless gem of information. Search the internet with keywords like “how to choose the best art college.” But remember every college will praise itself to the highest mountaintops! Stay objective, and be a “tough sell.” After all, it’s your future!

Third, trust your heart. It sounds like a line from Jedi training, but there should be something inside that tells you when an art college is right for you. To get that feeling, you certainly have to visit some schools in person. If during your visit, a little voice inside is screaming, “This place isn’t for me,” listen to that voice! That’s how you find the best art colleges. TALK to other students there. Hear how enthusiastic they are about the school. Attend classes as observer. Does the faculty impress you? Try and contact alumni of the college. They’ll tell you if the degree they earned was of benefit to them. Trust your feelings, Luke!

Fourth, make sure the degree the college offers will qualify you for the career you want. If you want to teach art in high-school, can you become certified at that college? If you want a job at an animation studio, make sure the college has the equipment you’ll use once you “get out in the real world.” It may be wise to contact a company you’d like to be working for after you graduate. Simply ask them what training they prefer. No matter how much you like the school, if it can’t take you where you want to go, choose another.

What makes the best art colleges, the ones that belong on your list? Well, YOU do! Give the search your best effort if you expect the best results.
