So you see yourself as a future star in the advertising industry and want to know about the best advertising colleges out there to help you achieve your dream?

The advertising industry is one of the most exciting, glamorous and, yes, sometimes lucrative fields out there. And with the number of ads the average person sees each day, it should be no surprise that this is a huge industry. In fact, in 2007, nearly $150 billion was spent on advertising in the United States alone. 

According to recent government statistics, there are somewhere around 50,000 agencies nationally employing nearly 460,000 people creating engaging television commercials and print ads, managing advertising campaigns and selling ads to major corporations. What’s more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the field to grow at a rate surpassing other industries in the years to come.

But finding the best advertising college for you is not as simple as checking out one of those college rankings list, being accepted to the top school and enrolling as an advertising major.

It takes a lot of people with a lot of different skills to place an ad in a Web site or a commercial on television, so there’s no uniformed set of classes suited for everyone who wants to break into advertising. Actually, many colleges don’t even offer a separate advertising program. The specific role you want to play in advertising may be a bigger factor in deciding which college would be right for you rather than the college itself. 

You may decide to you want to be an ad executive and therefore enroll in a college with a solid reputation in business management. Or, you may find an art institute is the best way to learn to create those glossy magazine print ads or zippy product Web sites.

Those who see themselves handling marketing and sales may want to work toward degrees in business management or marketing. A journalism or public relations degree will also help you get your foot in the door if you decide to work the public relations side of advertising.

Because of the diversity of advertising work responsibilities it’s also common for ad agency employees to hold liberal arts degrees.

If you’ve already decided on the type of work you’d like to do in your advertising career, you may find a university with a good program specializing in whatever skill set you’ve chosen to be your best bet.

Of course, if you can’t decide exactly what role you want to play in this field, there are colleges with comprehensive advertising programs. The Princeton Review cites 166 different educational institutions with advertising departments or schools.

After you’ve taken a few classes within these programs, you’ll have to decide on a specific sequence of classes focusing on areas such as branding or communications to complete your degree. It’s important that an advisor or career center in your college be able to help you find an internship to help you gain hands-on experience and begin networking.
