Visual Arts School
Should you consider going to visual arts school? We’ll, I’m no artist, but no doubt professional training from a visual arts school would be beneficial. Education in whatever endeavor we pursue reduces the learning curve dramatically.
The best artists are hungry, not for food but for perfection. When starving artists starve it is because they aren’t selling anything – that should make them think about their chosen vocation. Being your own worst critic is a positive attitude to take because it means your personal competition with yourself will make you work hard.

I’ve never wanted to be an animator, I love cartoons but an animators’ job doesn’t appeal to me. Sketching and illustration are more enjoyable to me because of the change of subject I can effect at my whim, as apposed to seeing the same scenes or characters over and over.
Creating logos is a lucrative facet of the industry that seems to be overlooked when people list the different visual arts disciplines, but just think of FedEx without seeing the arrow in the negative space between the ‘E’ and ‘x’. Think of Chevron without seeing chevrons. Think of Blackwater USA without seeing a bear claw. Logos are an important part of company’s identity.
Art has been used to promote political ideas and as a form of protest throughout its history. By the same token intercity gangs and juvenile delinquents rebel against ‘the establishment’, expressing themselves by hijacking a particular art form. All spray painted graffiti and ‘tagging’ is an eyesore, not art. Some might disagree with my opinion, but that begs a debate over what is art and what is defacing public property.
Oil, water and other painting are made to look simple by television programs on public television, as are independent short films. Usually the short films are made by students or recent visual arts school graduates who have earned degrees in film making. Some are seriously primitive while others incorporate interesting photography, computer art, paintings, and animation.
I see commercials for visual arts schools on television on a regular basis, usually pushing graphic design and computer animation. Video games production and special effects related to film making continue to make leaps and bounds as technology improves. Video games in particular are extremely profitable and popular world wide, not only with children and teenagers, but adults, male and female. Developing video games is a dream job for many amateurs. It is certainly a position that requires specific technologic instruction.
Speaking of commercials, though it may not seem glamorous there is no doubt that all the disciplines of visual art are incorporated in that huge industry. The marketing and advertising industries are massive consumers of the skills honed and directed at visual art schools.
These are all excellent reasons to receive further education, if you wish to make a hobby a career.
