Courses are structured to integrate not only traditional architectural theory and practice, but to encourage creative thinking by introducing interdisciplinary ideas and methods to the study of architecture. Students will find courses that take a broad approach to architectural study as well as those that are more narrowly focused on specific interests of the individual student. Upper division courses are designed to challenge and stretch the students’ understanding of architecture and at the same time encourage them to question and to search for non-conventional alternatives. A sound foundation of accepted architectural theory is provided; what the student builds upon that foundation is limited only by his or her effort and imagination.
The study of architecture easily extends beyond the boundaries of the university. The city of Austin’s architecture offers structures that range from 19th century homes to more recent ultra-modern eco-friendly constructions. In downtown Austin, the Bremond Block is a historical area of eleven homes built mid-nineteenth century by Eugene Bremond. Other such treasures can easily be found around the city and offer architectural students the opportunity to experience architectural history first-hand.
The University of Texas at Austin has a rich legacy and is recognized world-wide for excellence. The University was ranked number 15 on the list of the world’s best universities in a 2004 survey by The Times of London. National Research Council surveys also ranked seven of UT Austin’s doctoral programs among the top ten in the United States. Add to that the fact that Austin, Texas was ranked the Best Big City in “Best Places to Live” by Money Magazine and the combination is one that can’t be beat. Academic excellence, rich history and tradition, value for the money and great quality of life all add up to make the UT Austin Architecture School one of the best places in the world to study.
