Deer Valley Unified School District #97 is located in Phoenix, Arizona. We know that too often, education does not prepare you for the real world, that you might take graphic design classes and never be taught how to prepare a document for print or FTP it to a printer. We know that good performing arts classes have to have great instructors, that in a down economy, there is a misconception that architecture schools are particularly hard hit, and that good game design schools are not as constrained by geography as other entertainment industry niches.
Because each age group brings its own set of challenges, the school district has its curriculum broken into three categories: 1) Beginning Artists, 2) Developing Artists and 3) Capable Artists.
Students in the Beginning Artists category fall in the age range of six through eight. They understand that art provides a vehicle through which they can communicate with adults or other children. Art can be used to tell a story even though the sophistication may not be present, the child is more than willing to share their artwork and explain the details behind it.
In the Developing Artists category, ages seven through nine, students are beginning to look at their work a bit more critically. However, instead of editing or correcting their work, these students are more inclined to start a new project and forsake the old.
The last group, Capable Artists, consists of students ranging in age from nine through 12. These students begin to use their skills to interpret space as they see it. Students at this level will create artwork that will create the illusion of depth. Unlike students in the Developing Artists category, these older students are willing to edit their work and rework their art until it meets their satisfaction.
