Advertising is a huge field, and there are so many subcategories and titles within each part of the field it can be dizzying to someone just getting started. That said, there aremany different salary ranges depending on your position. Many programs offer specialties in advertising, but many companies prefer their advertisers to have a companion skill- economics, marketing, and art are some of the most common minors for someone with a major in advertising.  Many companies will also pay for master’s degrees for select employees that already have a bachelor’s. The people with the most upward mobility and higher salaries in advertising are usually flexible with higher degrees. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, jobs in advertising are expected to have average growth in the foreseeable future.
   
    There are many specialties within the advertising field. An advertising and promotions associate can expect to make a salary anywhere from $45,000 U.S. dollars to $85,000, depending on experience.  An advertising production specialist will make $36,000 to $71,000 over the course of their career. An advertising sales agent / representative will make between $30,000 and $50,000 per year. A copywriter can expect to make $25,000 to $40,000 per year. As more titles and specialties are under your belt, expect to make a higher salary.  Often, these title structures will vary a lot from company to company, so be sure to be aware of what your position entails before you take it. Your salary will be higher as your seniority increases.  Be sure to keep a goal-driven portfolio documenting your achievements during the times when you are upwardly mobile. Expect your salary will change greatly during this time.
   
    Typically, the company type you decide to work for has more importance than the area in which you work.  Publicly held companies and “other organizations”, including hospitals, etc. pay much more than non-profits and franchises. This is one career that freelancing is a perfectly acceptable remedy to the location problem.  Generally, like in most professions, the more experience you have, the higher your pay rate is likely to be.  If you have a specific type of advertising you would like to get into, research the places with the most type of that industry.  Also, be prepared to work from the ground up if you have little relevant experience in the particular advertising field you start out in.
   
    Advertising is a fast paced job that may require you to handle different areas of different accounts all at once.  It is not unheard of for a copywriter to do some of the concept design for an ad campaign.  Many people who start off in one area of the business may end up in another corner of it (and working for a different company) within their first decade on the job.  A career in advertising also allows you to branch out into other, more creative endeavors, like character creation and design layout. Be prepared to dedicate yourself to important projects and learn to prioritize early on, as these will make you an indispensable teammate. More than two-thirds of those in advertising worked more than 40 hours per workweek!
